  • Karlsruhe model The universities and research institutions of the Karlsruhe region - with over 600 professors, 5,000 scientists, and 30,000 students as a research base - have join forces in a common technology transfer model, the so called Karlsruhe model, in order to enhance the commercialisation of research results. The main actors of the Karlsruhe model are: Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH FZK *University of Karlsruhe *Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim Research Centre for Information Technologies *engage AG Key Technology Ventures in the role of a private facilitator For the classical technology transfer the patent agency TLB is responsible for patenting and licensing activities of the three universities in Karlsruhe whereas the MAP department is in charge of these activities at the FZK. In case of innovative technology transfer, such as the creation of start-ups out of research results, these universities and research institutions cooperate with the private facilitator engage AG for the purpose of business development and entrepreneurship. Additionally the so called technology screening project was established by combining complementary expert knowledge to extend public-private-partnerships in order to foster the exploitation of research results. It is conducted by engage AG and all the involved partners of the Karlsruhe model to systematically identify, evaluate and further develop promising ideas with commercial potential. In this manner, the technology screening project serves as an engine to push promising ideas out of the innovation potential of the targeted institutions to the market and thus optimise return-on-research strategies.
